Choosing the right machine
Is the Miele PDR 518 ROP [EL] the right model for your site?
The Miele PDR 518 ROP [EL] is a high-capacity electric vented dryer for commercial sites that need fast drying, a large drum and reliable daily throughput. It is best suited where a 13-18kg drying capacity is appropriate and where external exhaust ducting can be installed or confirmed.
This section helps you check whether the machine fits your workload, utilities, ventilation, space, operating process and long-term support requirements before ordering.
When is this dryer a good fit?
This dryer is a good fit where the site needs a larger commercial vented dryer with strong throughput, residual moisture control and simple staff operation.
It is especially worth considering where:
- You need a 13-18kg commercial dryer for regular daily laundry loads.
- The site has, or can be designed with, suitable exhaust ducting to atmosphere.
- Fast drying turnaround is important for care, hospitality, facilities or commercial laundry work.
- You want residual moisture control to reduce the risk of over-drying.
- The site may need optional payment connection for shared or self-service use.
It is particularly relevant for care homes, hotels, commercial laundries, facilities management, launderettes, schools, universities, sports clubs, camp sites, holiday accommodation and larger shared laundry rooms.

What should I check before choosing this model?
The main checks are capacity, venting, electrical supply, available space, floor loading, service access and staff routine. This is a larger commercial dryer, so these details should be confirmed before ordering.
Check the following before specifying the machine:
- Workload: confirm that a 13-18kg dryer matches the washer capacity and daily laundry volume.
- Venting: confirm that exhaust ducting can be taken safely to atmosphere with suitable airflow.
- Electrical supply: confirm that a 400v, 35A supply is available or can be installed.
- Access: confirm delivery access, service access and space around the machine.
- Routine care: make sure users can clean the fluff filter and keep airways clear.
a&f can check the site services and recommend whether this vented model, a different capacity or another drying system would be more suitable.
When might another model be better?
Another model may be better if the site cannot provide suitable external venting, if the electrical supply is not available, or if the laundry volume does not justify this capacity.
Consider an alternative where:
- A heat pump dryer may suit sites where external vent ducting is not practical.
- A smaller dryer may be more appropriate for lighter or less frequent laundry loads.
- A larger dryer may be required where washer output is higher than this dryer can comfortably handle.
- A gas-heated dryer may be worth comparing where gas services and ventilation are suitable.
- A twin stacked dryer may be better where floor space is limited but two drying pockets are useful.
For high-use sites, the right answer is usually based on the whole laundry flow, including washer capacity, residual moisture, drying demand, staff handling and the available services.
Services, utilities and installation checks
This is a 400v electric vented dryer. It should be selected only after confirming the site’s electrical supply, ventilation route, room ventilation, floor loading and service access.
Key installation checks include:
- Power Required: 400v, 35A, with 18.6 kW total connected load.
- Ventilation: exhaust ducting must be connected and the room must have sufficient ventilation.
- Dimensions: H 1400 x W 906 x D 1035 mm, excluding access and service clearance.
- Floor load: maximum floor load is listed by Miele as 1967 N.
- Maintenance: filters, airways and ducting need routine checking and cleaning.
Vented dryers are often a strong choice for high-use laundry environments, but the ducting must be designed and maintained correctly for performance, safety and reliability.
Replacing an older model?
The project source files list historic Miele dryer equivalents for the PDR918/518 family as PT8407, PT7401 and PT8403. These model numbers should be kept exactly as written for website search and replacement matching.
Replacement checks usually include:
- Confirm the old model number from the data plate before matching the replacement.
- Check whether the existing ducting is correctly sized and still in good condition.
- Confirm whether the existing electrical supply matches the 400v, 35A requirement.
- Review whether the current laundry volume still suits a 13-18kg dryer.
- Check delivery route, floor loading, door swing and service access before ordering.
Older model search terms: PT8407, PT7401, PT8403.
If your existing dryer shows a different historic model number, a&f can check the data plate and confirm the closest current Miele or alternative commercial replacement.
Compliance, hygiene and environment
This is a commercial tumble dryer, not a thermal disinfection machine. It can form part of a professional laundry process, but hygiene outcomes depend on the full laundry process, including washing, segregation, handling, detergent choice, programme setup, drying, storage and staff procedure.
Relevant compliance and environmental points include:
- The dryer carries CE, VDE, VDE-EMC, IPX4, WEEE and UKCA markings.
- It is listed as complying with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
- Air Recycling helps reduce energy demand by reusing pre-heated process air.
- Good washer extraction reduces the drying load and can improve total laundry efficiency.
- Routine filter and duct care are important for performance, safety and energy use.
For care, healthcare, food, veterinary or other regulated settings, a&f can advise on the full laundry process rather than treating the dryer alone as the compliance solution.
